A short history of Withernsea

The name Withernsea probably comes from an Old English term for a lake beside a thorn tree. Around the middle of the 1800s the Hull and Holderness Railway connected the town with Hull, which made inexpensive holidays possible for working families. Pier Towers were built in 1877 for £12,000 and the pier followed in 1878 at a cost of £14,000, running to 399 yards. Ship collisions shortened it, beginning with the Saffron in 1880 and continuing in 1888 and 1893 when the Henry Parr struck it. The last 50 feet were removed in 1903. In 1916 the Admiralty set up a flying field at Owthorne, where No. 506 Special Duty Flight operated from June 1918 until activities ceased in June 1919. Six listed buildings stand near the centre, five Grade II and the Church of St Nicholas at Grade II*.
