A short history of Weymouth
Weymouth began as two settlements on opposite sides of the harbour. The southern one was called Weymouth by the 10th century and was a chartered borough and seaport by 1252. Melcombe Regis to the north was first noted in the 11th century and was a licensed wool port in 1310. It is thought to be where the Black Death reached England in 1348. In the 1530s Henry VIII had Sandsfoot Castle built at Wyke Regis. Elizabeth I united the two towns by Act of Parliament in 1571. Around 100 emigrants crossed the Atlantic in 1635 and settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Control of the town changed several times in the Civil War. George III holidayed here fourteen times between 1789 and 1805 and the King's Statue followed in 1810. Nothe Fort was built between 1860 and 1872. Of 126 listed buildings nearby, Gloucester Lodge and Radipole Old Manor are among five at Grade II*.
