In 1919 Sir Ebenezer Howard arranged the purchase of Hertfordshire land for a second garden city, following his earlier work at Letchworth. A company called Second Garden City Limited was formed that October. On 4 February 1920 its board chose the name Digswell, after the existing small village, but six days later settled on Welwyn Garden City. The company took the same name in April 1920. Louis de Soissons was appointed architect and town planner. The first house was occupied shortly before Christmas 1920. In 1948 the town was designated a new town and a Development Corporation took over the company's assets. That body was wound up in 1966. Housing and green spaces passed to the district council between 1978 and 1983. Within 1.3 miles of the centre stand 28 listed buildings, among them Templewood School and Welwyn Railway Viaduct, both Grade II*.
