A short history of Hatfield
Hatfield is of Saxon origin and its name comes from Old English words for a heath field. In the early tenth century it belonged to Ordmær and his wife Ealde. Between 932 and 956 it passed to Æthelstan Half-King in exchange for land in Devon. King Edgar seized it in 959 but Æthelstan's sons recovered it after his death. Domesday Book in 1086 lists it as belonging to the Abbey of Ely. The town was later called Bishop's Hatfield. Cardinal Morton built the Old Palace in 1497. Elizabeth Tudor spent three years held there and legend says she heard of her accession in 1558 while resting under an oak in the park. De Havilland opened its airfield and factory in 1930 and the New Town was designated in 1946. Of 72 listed buildings nearby, the Parish Church of St Etheldreda and The Palace are Grade I.
