A short history of Warlingham
Flint implements and late Celtic burial urns found in 1909 show that people lived nearby long before the Middle Ages. Its earliest written form, Warlyngham, dates from 1144 and the modern spelling from 1198. The name is thought to come from Old English words for the homestead of Wærla's followers. In 1144 William de Watevile assigned the manor to Bermondsey Priory, which kept it until the Dissolution. All Saints' Church dates from around 1250. The Crewes manor dates to a 1353 arrangement and in 1538 the Westhall manor was granted to John Rede. Sir John Gresham received the manor in 1544 and his grandson sold it in 1591. All Saints' was restored in 1857 and gained a south aisle in 1893. A psychiatric hospital opened on the Chelsham border in 1903 and St Christopher's church in 1907. Of eight listed buildings, All Saints' and The Vicarage hold Grade II*.
