A short history of Croydon

There is some evidence of small Roman settlement at Croydon and a large Saxon cemetery was in use between the 5th and 7th centuries. The name most likely comes from Old English words for crocus and valley. It was first recorded in 809 as Crogeden and by the late Saxon period the Archbishops of Canterbury held the estate. Domesday Book of 1086 names the place Croindene and shows Archbishop Lanfranc as its holder. The entry gives 16 hides plus a virgate, a church, a mill valued at 5s, 38 plough teams, 8 acres of meadow and 200 hogs' worth of woodland. It counted 73 households and a tax value of £37 10s. Archbishop Robert Kilwardby obtained a weekly market charter in 1276, which probably marks the start of Croydon as a town. The Surrey Iron Railway opened in 1803 and later railways made it a commuter town. Of 148 listed buildings nearby, 14 are Grade I, including the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Old Palace and the Hospital of the Holy Trinity.
