A short history of Tynemouth
People have lived on the headland over the mouth of the Tyne since the Iron Age. A monastery was founded there in the 7th century and was sacked by the Danes in 800. It was rebuilt, then wrecked a second time in 875 by Vikings led by Halfdan Ragnarsson, who also raided Jarrow and it was working again by 1083. Kings reported to have been buried at the monastery include Oswin of Deira in 651 and Malcolm III of Scots in 1093. In 1314, following the defeat at Bannockburn, Edward II escaped from Tynemouth aboard a ship. Around 1325 the prior built a fishing and trading port, which began a long dispute with Newcastle over shipping rights. Prince Rupert landed there in August 1642. A parliamentary borough was created in 1832 and a municipal borough in 1849, which became a county borough in 1904 and was abolished in 1974. The area has 62 listed buildings, among them three Grade II* structures: two parts of Clifford's Fort and the Accumulator Tower in Albert Edward Dock.
