A short history of Jarrow

The name Jarrow is first recorded in the 8th century and comes from the Gyrwe, an Anglian tribe whose name means fen dwellers, perhaps a reference to the wetland of Jarrow Slake. Norman influence altered the opening sound of the name. Ceolfrid commissioned three Bibles in 692 at the monastery of St Paul and one became the Codex Amiatinus. Vikings raided it in 794 and 875 before Henry VIII dissolved it. The monastery ruins and the Church of St Paul are Grade I listed and Bede Cottage with Bede House and Monkton Farmhouse are Grade II*. Jarrow stayed small until Charles Mark Palmer founded a shipyard in 1852. A train collision at Bede junction killed seventeen people in 1915. Palmer's yard closed in 1933 and the Jarrow March to London began in 1936. The last shipyard closed in 1980.
