In 1821 the Cinderloo Uprising brought 3,000 people out in protest at reduced pay for coal workers and three striking colliers died. Dawley New Town was designated on 16 January 1963 and the first homes on Sutton Hill were occupied in 1967. An order of 29 November 1968 extended the area and renamed it Telford after the engineer Thomas Telford. The area has 105 listed buildings including the Grade I Church of St James.
