A short history of SW1X

Belgravia takes its name from Belgrave in Cheshire, near Eaton Hall, the Grosvenor family seat. The land was once the Five Fields, grazing ground crossed by footpaths, where Bloody Bridge over the Westbourne was linked with robbers and highwaymen. A body was found there in 1728 and a muffin man was robbed and blinded in 1749. Being far from London also made it a favoured place for duels. Market gardens were established. Building began after George III relocated to Buckingham House and built houses along Grosvenor Place. In 1826 Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, gained parliamentary rights to build and agreed a design with Thomas Cubitt. Cubitt laid out the first block of Eaton Square, named after Eaton Hall, from 1827 and the stucco terraces were built between 1830 and 1847. After World War II many large houses became embassies and offices.
