A short history of SW1V

Timber posts dating from between 1550 BC and 300 BC, found beside Vauxhall Bridge in 1993, are thought to have joined an island with the southern shore of the river. A ferry served the site before the first Vauxhall Bridge, originally called Regent Bridge, was built between 1809 and 1816 as the earliest iron bridge across the Thames. A private company ran it as a toll bridge until 1879. Grosvenor Bridge was built in 1859 and 1860 by the Victoria Station and Pimlico Railway as the earliest railway crossing of the river in central London. It was widened in 1865 and 1866. The present Vauxhall Bridge opened in 1906 after eight years of work and was the earliest in London to carry trams. Grosvenor Bridge gained another track in 1907 and was rebuilt between 1963 and 1967. Vauxhall Bridge became Grade II* listed in 2008. Nearby are 512 listed buildings, with Grade I entries at Queen Anne's Gate and Broad Sanctuary.
