A short history of Stourport-on-Severn

Stourport grew around the point where the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal met the Severn, a terminus finished in 1768 on meadowland lying south west of Lower Mitton, then a hamlet. The site was named Stourmouth and later Newport before Stourport was settled on by 1771. The junction with the Birmingham Canal followed in 1772, making the town a leading distribution point for goods moving to and from the West Midlands. A brick church designed by James Rose in 1782 was never completed and was partly pulled down after storm damage. St Michael's now stands partly within its ruins. The number of residents grew from roughly a dozen in the 1760s to 1300 by 1795. From 1812 it scarcely increased and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal of 1816 sharply reduced the older canal's revenue. General George S. Patton addressed American troops in the town in 1944. Of 101 listed buildings near the centre four are Grade II*: Tontine Buildings, the Church of St Bartholomew, Church House and the Rectory.
