The Domesday Book recorded Wribbenhall, which lies across the river from the main part of the town, as belonging to the manor of Kidderminster. Load Street, once the market place, takes its name from an old word for ferry. In the 14th century the town was called Beau lieu and two centuries later John Leland wrote favourably of it. King Edward IV granted Bewdley borough status and a weekly market in 1472 and the borough kept that status until 1974. St Anne's Church was built between 1745 and 1748. Samuel Kenrick settled in Bewdley as a banker in 1765 and his letters describe John Wesley's annual visits.
