A short history of Stourbridge
Stourbridge began as a settlement called Bedcote, probably Anglo-Saxon in origin. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the manor containing it as Swynford or Suineford, now Oldswinford. A 1255 assize roll for Worcestershire names the town Sturbrug or Sturesbridge after a bridge over the River Stour. Glass making began in the early 1600s, aided by suitable clay and French coal miners among the Huguenots. The trade peaked in the 19th century, mostly in Wordsley, Amblecote and Oldswinford. The Red House Cone stands at Wordsley. Foster, Rastrick and Company built the Stourbridge Lion locomotive at its foundry. Amblecote joined the borough in 1966 and the town entered the West Midlands county in 1974. Of 58 listed buildings the Parish Church of St Thomas is Grade I. The Quaker Meeting House, War Memorial, Old Swinford Hospital and The Old Foundry are Grade II*. Wildfires destroyed homes and the golf course in August 2026.
