A short history of Hagley
Bronze Age burial mounds on Stakenbridge Lane and an Iron Age hill fort on Wychbury Hill show early settlement. The Domesday Book records the place as Hageleia, in the Clent Hundred and notes that it had a priest. The name may come from Old English words for a haw wood or clearing or from a clearing linked to a man called Haecga. The De Hagley family held the manor from 1130 until 1411 and the Lyttelton family settled there in the 1590s. The parish register begins in 1538 and is the oldest in England. George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton, landscaped the grounds and built the present Palladian mansion in place of an earlier timber-framed hall. The railway arrived in 1852 and led to the growth of West Hagley. George Edmund Street largely rebuilt St John the Baptist church in the later 19th century. Three Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
