A short history of Skelmersdale
Skelmersdale first appears in records in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name comes from the Old Norse personal name Skjaldmarr combined with a word probably meaning valley and it was written as Skalmeresedel in 1136. In the mid-14th century the manor was held by William Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre. Coal mining developed alongside the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Blague Gate railway station opened in 1858 on the Ormskirk to Rainford line. Many miners were Welsh migrants and at least six dissenting chapels stood by the start of the 20th century. Brickworks also operated in the area. The town belonged to the Parish of Ormskirk until Skelmersdale Urban District Council was created at the end of the 19th century. In 1961 it received new town status to house overspill population from north Liverpool. Sixteen listed buildings lie within 1.2 miles of the centre, all Grade II.
