A short history of Orrell
Orrell takes its name from Anglo Saxon words for a hill that was dug for ore. Before the Norman Conquest it was the north-western outlying part of the manor of Newton-in-Makerfield. In 1212 the name was recorded as Horul and Richard de Orrell held the manor. Orel appears in 1292 and Orhull in 1294 with Orul in 1307 and later Orrell-in-Makerfield. The manor was later divided and passed to the Hollands of Upholland then the Lovels and the Earls of Derby before reaching Roger Leigh of Aspull. Orrell family branches held small estates here for centuries and William Orrell lived at Orrell Hall in 1558. The Orrell Collieries mined coal from 1740 to 1850 and a tramroad to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Crooke followed in 1812, engineered by Robert Daglish. Nearby are 39 listed buildings including the Grade I Church of St Thomas the Martyr.
