A short history of Sherborne
The Saxons who lived there called the settlement scir burne, which translates as a clear stream, taking the name from a brook flowing through the middle of the town. The Domesday Book uses the same name. In 705 the diocese of Wessex was divided and King Ine established an abbey for St Aldhelm, who became the first bishop at Sherborne. The see covered Dorset, Somerset and Devon until about 909 when it was reduced to Dorset. In 933 King Æthelstan granted land to the nuns of Shaftesbury Abbey. The bishop's seat moved to Old Sarum in 1075 and the church became a Benedictine monastery. Roger de Caen built a fortified palace in the 12th century. Fire damaged the abbey in 1437. Sir John Horsey bought the monastery buildings in 1539 and they became the parish church. Sir Walter Raleigh built Sherborne Castle in 1594 and Sir Thomas Fairfax besieged the old palace in 1645, leaving it in ruins.
