A Celtic trackway that became Watling Street crossed what is now Blackheath. Kidbrooke takes its name from an Anglo-Saxon phrase for a brook where kites were seen, which indicates nobody lived there at the time. Blackheath is recorded in 1166 as Blachehedfeld and was the meeting place of a hundred. Rebels gathered there in 1381 and 1450 and Cornish rebels were defeated nearby on 17 June 1497. Kidbrooke's church, in place by the 12th century at the latest, had no priest by 1428. St Michael and All Angels was built between 1828 and 1830 and a Blackheath parish followed in 1854. Kidbrooke stayed rural until its station opened in 1895 and housing followed from the 1920s. Of 139 listed buildings nearby Morden College and 1 to 14 The Paragon are Grade I.
