A short history of Raunds

The name Raunds first appears in an Anglo-Saxon charter of about 972 to 992 as Randan. Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Rande and a later survey of Northamptonshire gives Raundes. The name is the plural of an Old English word meaning border. On 25 February 1899 Robert Coggins bought land from the Duchy of Lancaster where his shoe factory and houses stood. In May 1905 a wages dispute over army bootmaking ended in a march to London. On 10 August 1911 the town recorded 36.7 °C, a British temperature record that stood until 1990. The boot and shoe trade declined in the 1950s and 1960s. Roman villa remains were found near Stanwick in the mid-1980s and in 2002 Time Team uncovered an Anglo-Saxon cemetery. Of 18 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Peter is Grade I. The churchyard cross and Number 59 (Thorpe House) are Grade II*.
