A short history of Higham Ferrers
The name means high homestead or village. The castle is thought to date from soon after the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the Ferrers family are linked with the town in 1166. William de Ferrers, Lord of the Manor, granted the first charter in 1251 and created a borough beside his castle where people were settling and trading. Henry Chichele, born in the town around 1364, became Archbishop of Canterbury and founded All Souls College, Oxford. Higham Ferrers School was founded in 1422. The castle was neglected from the late 15th century and demolished in 1523 with its stone sent to Kimbolton Castle. Charters followed in 1556 and 1604 and liberties were confirmed after 1661. The borough lost its one MP in 1832. Victoria's later charter was the only one in English. Of 50 nearby listed buildings, seven are Grade I, including the Bede House, the Church of St Mary and Chichele College.
