The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Stoche, an Old English name meaning a stockade beside the Roman road. The first part of the modern name is thought to refer to the reddish local soil. The Waldegrave family held the manor from the time of the Civil War. Coal was discovered in 1763 and between 1800 and 1850 mines including Ludlows, Middle Pit, Old Pit, Smallcombe, Tynings and Wellsway opened. The Somerset Coal Canal had a southern arm ending in the town, which was converted to a tramway in 1815. Output peaked around 1901 with 79 collieries. The final two collieries, Kilmersdon and Writhlington, shut in September 1973. There are 17 listed buildings within about 0.6 miles of the centre, all Grade II.
