A short history of Paulton

Paulton lay in the hundred of Chewton. Sir John de Palton held the manor when Edward III was king and his descendants held it after him. John Hill, an innkeeper, built Hill House around 1760. The Somerset Coal Canal ended at Paulton basin, where tramroads linked at least 15 collieries to the water. In the 1820s and 1830s the canal carried record tonnages of coal, which supplied the Georgian development of Bath. By 1834 a nephew of Thomas Ames Hill, the son of John Hill, had taken over the Red Lion. The tramroads and the collieries they served were disused by 1871 and the canal lay derelict by the end of the 19th century. Walter Draper bought Hill House in 1902 and later sold it to the printers Purnell's. On 17 September 1944 a glider bound for Arnhem crashed close to the village and 23 men died. Eighteen listed buildings stand near the centre and the Church of the Holy Trinity is the highest graded at Grade II*.
