Portsmouth itself is absent from the 1086 Domesday Book, but Bocheland (Buckland), Copenore (Copnor) and Frodentone (Fratton) are recorded there. The town is said to have been founded around 1180 by Jean de Gisors, an Anglo-Norman merchant, who ordered a chapel to St Thomas Becket that later became a parish church. Henry VII ordered the first drydock in 1496 and the Great Stone Dock dates from 1698. A ring of Palmerston Forts was complete by 1859. City status came in 1926 and the Portsmouth Blitz killed 930 people. The area has 151 listed buildings, including four Grade I: Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum, Portchester Castle, the Block Mill and the Church of St Mary.
