A short history of Pershore

The name Pershore comes from the Old English perscōra, which meant a shore or slope where osiers grew and refers to the town's position between the Avon and a ridge. Parts of Pershore Abbey date from the 11th century. The original building was much larger but it was plundered under Henry VIII at the Dissolution and its nave destroyed. The north transept later collapsed. Today's nave stands over the western section of what was once the choir. The town also has Georgian architecture and its Town Hall, first built as the post office, was completed in 1932. In 1964 the Council for British Archaeology placed Pershore on a list of 51 towns it considered worth weighing up for preservation. Of 196 listed buildings near the centre, two are Grade I: the Abbey Church of Holy Cross with Saint Edburgha and Perrott House.
