A short history of Pembury

Archaeologists working along a water pipeline route from Pembury in January 2010 found traces of a late Iron Age dwelling, including postholes, pits, ditches and pottery. Elsewhere on the route they uncovered a medieval enclosure and five round pits scorched by fire, possibly hearths, kilns or charcoal production. The church of St Peter has Norman origins and may date from the late 11th or early 12th century, which suggests a settlement before the Conquest. The earliest known record of the name is Peppingeberia in the Textus Roffensis, a work of the 12th century. Edward Hasted noted that old deeds also gave it as "Pepenbery". The first certain date linked to the church is 1337, when John Culpeper of Bayhall undertook works there. Eleven listed buildings stand within half a mile of the centre. Ten are Grade II and Downingbury Farmhouse is Grade II*.
