A short history of Tonbridge

Tonbridge was recorded in Domesday Book in 1086 as Tonebrige, a name that may refer to a bridge belonging to an estate or to a man called Tunna. Richard Fitz Gilbert built a motte and bailey castle there in the 11th century and founded the Priory of St Mary Magdalene in 1124. No bridge is recorded before 1191. The castle and town were besieged more than once, by King John and later by Prince Edward, whose siege ended with the garrison burning the town. Tonbridge School was established in 1552 and some 500 townspeople fought at the Battle of Hartley in 1554. An Act of 1740 made the Medway navigable to the town. The spelling changed from Tunbridge to Tonbridge in 1870.
