A short history of Ormskirk
The name Ormskirk is of Old Norse origin and joins a personal name, Ormr, to a word for church, although who Ormr was is unknown. The Domesday Book of 1086 does not mention the town, which may then have belonged to Lathom. Around 1189 the lord of Lathom gave the church to Burscough Priory. Edward I granted the priory's monks a market charter in 1286 and Thursday trading is recorded from at least 1292. A tower was added to the parish church around 1548 to hold the priory's bells. The Old Town Hall was finished in 1779. A Poor Law Union was set up in 1837 and a workhouse opened in 1853. A clock tower was built in 1876. Of 53 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Peter and St Paul and the Water Tower on Tower Hill are Grade II*.
