A short history of Burscough

Remains of a large Roman fort, begun in the 1st century, lie at Burscough. It covers about 30,000 square metres, had connections with the Roman forts of Wigan and Ribchester and is a scheduled monument. The settlement later developed as a small agricultural village sitting on a low rise overlooking the coastal plain. Its name has Viking roots and comes from Burh-skogr, meaning a woodland fortress. Burscough Priory was important to the early village and its ruins stand to the southwest. Tombs of the Stanley family, earls of Derby, were once kept there and now stand in Ormskirk parish church. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the railways brought development to the north of the old village, in an area that became Burscough Bridge. It began as a separate settlement and has since merged with Burscough. From about 1892 an Ordnance Depot stood on the eastern edge of the town until 1996 and the site is now housing. Eleven listed buildings stand near the centre and the Church of St John is Grade II*.
