The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded it as Norfluet, with Northflet following in 1201 and Northfleet established by 1610. A flour mill stood in the harbour by the 18th century and cement making came later. The first steamboat between Gravesend and London ran in 1815. In 1878 the steamer Princess Alice left Rosherville pier and collided with the collier Bywell Castle and 640 people died. The gardens closed in 1901 and were used for early films between 1903 and 1911. Bombing on 16 August 1941 killed 29 people. Of 26 listed buildings nearby, the Parish Church Of St Botolph is Grade I.
