A short history of Gravesend

Gravesend appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Gravesham, held by Odo, Earl of Kent and Bishop of Bayeux, half-brother of William the Conqueror, with mills, hythes and fisheries listed. Several explanations exist for the name, one linking it to the home of a lord's reeve. A leper hospital was founded here in 1189 and its site became Milton Chantry, refounded as a chapel in 1320/21. In 1268 Henry III granted a market charter and town status to the parishes of Gravesend and Milton. A French fleet raided the town in 1380 and a further charter of 1401 allowed boats to run between London and Gravesend. Henry VIII ordered a blockhouse built on the river front in 1543. Pocahontas was buried at St George's church in 1617. Milton Barracks opened in 1862. The area has 90 listed buildings, among them three Grade II* examples: New Tavern Fort, Milton Chantry and the Church of St Peter and St Paul.
