A short history of Lees

Lees dates from the 14th century and is thought to take its name from John de Leghes, who served the lord of the local manor. At that time it was a cluster of hamlets linked for church purposes to Ashton-under-Lyne. Farming was the chief occupation, with hand-loom weaving adding to household income. A chalybeate spring found in the late 18th century gave the village a name for mineral waters, which were bottled and sold across the country. About 60,000 people visited the spa in August 1821. Plans for a spa town gave way to unplanned growth around textile manufacture and by the late 19th century eleven cotton mills had altered the village entirely. Suffragette Annie Kenney worked at Leesbrook Mill. Of 28 listed buildings nearby the Church of St Thomas is Grade II*.
