A short history of Ashton-under-Lyne
Flints and a skull found on Ashton Moss point to prehistoric activity there. The name probably comes from Old English for a settlement by ash trees, though the origin of "under-Lyne" is uncertain. Ashton is not named directly in the Domesday survey of 1086, perhaps because coverage of the area was incomplete. It is doubtful that the St Michael's Church in the Manchester entry stood here. In the 12th century the Assheton family held the manor for the barons of Manchester, with Ashton Old Hall as their seat. A royal charter of 1414 made Ashton a market town. The Assheton male line ended in 1514 and the manor reached the Earls of Stamford in 1758. Cotton arrived in 1769 and the town was replanned on a grid. Municipal borough status followed in 1847 and most mills closed in the 1920s. The Church of St Michael and All Angels is Grade I listed.
