A short history of KT9
Chessington's name comes from Anglo-Saxon words for a hill belonging to a man named Cissa. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Cisedune and Cisendone, with Robert de Wateville holding one portion and Milo Crispin another. The entry lists 1½ hides, part of a mill, four ploughs and woodland worth 30 hogs. It rendered £7. A mansion built in 1348, now called the Burnt Stub, became a royalist stronghold in the Civil War and was razed by Parliamentary forces. From the 18th century the Vere Barker family rebuilt it in Neo-Gothic style. Samuel Crisp, a friend of Fanny Burney, lived at Chessington Hall in that century. On 24 March 1884 Malden Rushett, until then a detached part of Malden parish, was transferred to Chessington parish. The Burnt Stub grounds became a zoo in 1931 and RAF Hook opened around 1938 as a barrage balloon depot. Four Grade II listed buildings include the Church of St Mary the Virgin.
