A short history of IG6

Barkingside is believed to take its name from lying on the Barking side of Hainault Forest, inside the manor and parish of Barking. Daniel Day, a Wapping pump and block maker, started the Fairlop Fair in July 1725 at the Fairlop Oak. The name Fair Lop Tree is first certainly recorded in 1738. By the middle of that century the fair drew around a hundred thousand people. Chapman and Andre's map of Essex from 1777 depicts Barking Side as a common running along the forest's western edge. The oak caught fire in 1805 and had blown down by 1820. Holy Trinity Church dates to 1840. An Act of 1851 allowed Hainault Forest to be enclosed and most of it became farmland. Barnardo's was founded in Barkingside in 1866. The last sizeable fair took place in 1900. The area has 12 listed buildings and the highest graded is Dr Barnardo's Memorial at Barnardo's at Grade II*.
