The name Hedon comes from Old English words meaning heather hill. Hedon is absent from the Domesday Book, which points to its creation by the Normans as a port. Henry II granted the first charter in 1158 and improved ones followed in 1200, 1248 and 1272. Edward III allowed the town to choose a mayor and a charter of 1415 brought a mace now held in Hedon Town Hall. Hedon lost its parliamentary seat in 1832. The Hull and Holderness Railway reached the town in 1854. A racecourse staged racing from 1888 until 1909 with a pause between 1895 and 1906 and it became an aerodrome in 1929. Amy Johnson landed there in 1930. Hedon lost its borough status in 1974. Of 88 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Augustine is Grade I and five are Grade II*.
