A short history of Haydock

The name Haydock is taken to mean a place of barley and wheat and an undated record gives it as Heidiog. Haydock was a township with a large pastoral area until coal was found beneath it. It grew during the Industrial Revolution as canals and railways arrived and at one point up to 13 collieries worked there. On 7 June 1878 the Wood Pit disaster killed 189 men and boys according to the Inspector of Mines, among them Nathan Boon and his five sons. Fifteen further victims named elsewhere would bring the toll to 204. By the early 1900s the village had three railway stations. In the 1930s the East Lancashire Road cut across the north side, where former open pits were later industrialised, while the south saw large post-war housing. Wood Pit, the last colliery, closed in 1971. Two Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre: Pear Tree Farmhouse and The Grange.
