The name Golborne comes from Old English words describing a stream with marsh marigolds. A settlement was already there when the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086. The name was written Goldeburn in 1187 and Golburne in 1242. The manor was divided into two halves, one held by the Lords of Lowton and the other by the Golbornes until the reign of Henry III. Later holders included the Fleetwoods and Leghs. A battle at Red Gap in 1648, during the Second Civil War, took place along the old road running south from Golborne. Under Charles II, Colonel Blood, who attempted to steal the Crown Jewels, lived at Holcroft Hall. Mining drove rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution. A methane explosion at the colliery in 1979 killed ten miners and the pit closed in 1989. Six Grade II listed buildings stand nearby including the Church of St Thomas.
