The name Harwich comes from the Old English here-wic, meaning military settlement. Roman remains have been found locally and two battles were fought on the River Stour to the north in 885. A chapel of ease was recorded in 1177 at what was probably a very small settlement. After the Duke of Norfolk gained a market right in 1253 the town began to develop and it gained borough status in 1318. French forces under Antonio Doria made a failed raid in 1339. A naval dockyard opened in 1652 and a fortified naval base followed in 1657. William of Orange aimed to invade at Harwich in 1688 but winds took his fleet to Torbay. HMS Conqueror, completed there in 1801, later captured Admiral Villeneuve at Trafalgar. St Nicholas became a parish church in 1871. Of 37 listed buildings nearby the Church of All Saints is graded II*.
