A short history of Felixstowe

Walton was the older settlement and had a Roman castle dating from the third century. The Domesday Book names only Walton, since Felixstowe then amounted to a handful of dwellings spread across the clifftops. The Felixstowe name was applied in the thirteenth century and is recorded as Filchestou in 1254 and Filchestowe in 1291. It may derive from an Old English name Filicia. Dutch soldiers landed in 1667 and failed to capture Landguard Fort. Seven Martello Towers were built in 1810 or 1811 and four survive. Work on the dock basin began in 1882 and the docks opened in 1886. The German imperial family came in 1891, which helped establish the resort and a pier followed in 1905. Bath Hotel was burnt in 1914 in a suffragette arson campaign. The area served as a seaplane base in the First World War and a Coastal Forces base in the Second. At least 48 people died in the 1953 flood. Three of the 21 listed buildings are Grade II*: the Church of St John the Baptist and St Felix, Walton Hall and the Church of St Mary.
