A short history of Halifax

When the Normans conquered England, Halifax lay within Wakefield, a sizeable manor in the king's possession. By the 13th century the manor was held by John de Warrenne, Earl of Surrey. The town's prosperity began with a woollen workshop established in 1414, when it is said to have had only thirteen houses. By the end of the 16th century the number had grown to 520. Merchants and clothworkers who left the Spanish Netherlands because of persecution are said to have improved the standards of manufacture and trade. Halifax was a borough by prescription and was not incorporated until 1848 and it became a county borough in 1888. Today 267 listed buildings stand near the centre. Three are Grade I: the Church of St John the Baptist, the Piece Hall and the Church of All Souls.
