A short history of Elland
Elland appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Elant, a name from Old English terms meaning river and land that reflects its setting on the south bank of the Calder. The Elland family, descended from Anglo-Saxon thegns, held the manor from before the Norman Conquest. Together with Greetland and Southowram it was a detached part of the Pontefract Honour lying within the Manor of Wakefield. The manor house incorporated a solar wing from the 13th century. Edward II granted John de Eland a charter allowing a Tuesday market and two fairs. The murder of Sir John de Eland in 1350 was followed the next year by the murders of his son and grandson, which ended the male line and passed the manor to the Savile family. The manor house was excavated in 1975. Of 39 listed buildings near the centre, New Hall and the Church of St Mary are Grade I.
