A short history of Gerrards Cross
Bulstrode Park Camp, a small Iron Age hillfort south-west of the town centre, is a scheduled monument. The land that became Gerrards Cross was wasteland called Chalfont Heath, later Gerrards Cross Common. In medieval times it had no village and lay across the borders of five parishes. Gerard of Chalfont owned land there in the 14th century and may be the source of the name, which appears in records by 1448. Why the name includes a cross is uncertain. The present crossroads dates from 1707 when an old road through Bulstrode Park was diverted. Until the 19th century only a few buildings stood beside the common. St James' Church was built in 1859 and became the parish church of a new ecclesiastical parish in 1861. A civil parish followed in 1895. The railway station opened in 1906 and the area around it developed soon afterwards. Within 0.7 miles of the centre stand 19 listed buildings, with the Church of St James the highest graded at Grade II* and the other 18 Grade II.
