A short history of Chalfont St Peter

Around 949 the Chalfont villages were not distinguished from one another and the whole area was called Ceadeles funtan, meaning chalk springs. By 1237 manorial rolls recorded this village as Chalfund Sancti Petri, the saint's name coming from the dedication of its church. In 1536 the manor, which had belonged to Missenden Abbey, was granted to Robert Drury. It was sold to the Bulstrodes in 1626 then conveyed to Thomas Gower in 1646 and bought by Richard Whitchurch in 1650. A separate ancient manor was named after the Brudenell family. Newlands was bought from a Mr Croke of Beaconsfield around 1770. Gerrards Cross began as a hamlet within the parish. Georgian shops formed the first major development of the village centre and further building followed in the late 1920s. The 1960s brought the clearance of most of those Georgian shops. Within 0.8 miles of the centre stand 12 listed buildings (11 Grade II and one Grade II*), the highest graded being the Parish Church of St Peter.
