In 1864 the Stewart family founded a nursery to exploit a milder climate than their Scottish base. By 1892 Hampreston parish included a hamlet with the 14th-century All Saints church and small clusters of homes at Canford Bottom, Stapehill, Longham and Fern Down. A road junction was labelled Cricket's Cross in 1898. In 1913 Colehill parish took 944 acres from Hampreston including Canford Bottom. St Mary's church was begun in 1933 as housing lay far from Hampreston and finished in 1972. The Stewarts opened one of Britain's first garden centres in 1955 and most of the town arose over the next 20 to 30 years.
