A short history of Fareham

Fareham has a documented past reaching back to the Norman era, when some of William's forces travelled inland from Fareham Creek on the way to Winchester. The Domesday Book records the place as Ferneham, with 90 households. The ford at the creek, at the head of Portsmouth Harbour, was where the Bishop of Winchester had his mills. Fareham was historically a manufacturer of bricks, which went into the Royal Albert Hall and a grower of strawberries and other seasonal fruits. Major residential development came in the 1960s and by the 1970s the town had grown almost to reach neighbouring Funtley, Titchfield, Catisfield and Portchester. Henry Cort, the iron pioneer, had a rolling mill at Funtley. In 1995 the derelict Palladian mansion Cams Hall was restored. The area has 146 listed buildings, 11 of them Grade II*, including the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Roseneath, Kintyre House and Bishopwood. Fort Fareham is a scheduled monument.
