A short history of E8
Hackney began as a Saxon settlement of the 5th or 6th century called Haca's ey, meaning raised ground in marshland. The Domesday Book does not name Hackney, which then formed part of the manor of Stepney. A leper hospital was founded in Dalston around 1280 and the name was first recorded as Derleston in 1294. In Tudor times Henry VIII had a palace in the Hackney area and the tower of St Augustine's survives as the oldest building. By 1724 a single street carried an unbroken line of buildings. A larger church was begun in 1791 and was not completed until 1812 or 1813. The railway arrived in 1850 and by 1859 Dalston had outgrown Kingsland, which disappeared. Trams appeared in the 1870s. Of 190 listed buildings nearby, four are Grade I, including the Old Tower of the former Church of St Augustine and the Church of St Chad.
