A short history of DA16
East Wickham, in Welling, is probably among the oldest settlements here, with a Neolithic stone axe found in 1910 and Roman building remains near Danson in 1989. The name may derive from a word for a spring matching an underground spring at Welling Corner or from the Willing family recorded locally in 1301. Welling was a coaching staging post on Watling Street with three inns and remained a village until the Bexleyheath Line opened on 1 May 1895. After World War I Bexley Urban District Council put up more than 400 homes lying north of the railway. Sale of the Danson estate then opened southern land to suburban building. In 1965 the area passed from Kent to Greater London. Five listed buildings stand near the centre, including Danson Park Mansion at Grade I and, at Grade II*, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Stables To Danson Park.
