A short history of DA14

Foots Cray took its name from the River Cray and from Godwin Fot, a Saxon who owned land locally and was named in the Domesday Book in 1086. Sidcup is thought to derive from Cetecopp, first recorded in 1254 and Thomas de Sedcopp held an estate there in the 1450s. Foots Cray Place was rebuilt around 1754 for Bourchier Cleeve. Late in that century Edward Hasted described Sidcup as a small street of houses with a busy inn. Foots Cray Place was remodelled in 1792 for Benjamin Harenc then in 1823 for Nicholas Vansittart, 1st Baron Bexley. The two settlements became one urban district in 1902. After the First World War Foots Cray's traditional industries declined while Sidcup grew rapidly once a railway linked it to central London, so the district was renamed Sidcup in 1921. Fire struck Foots Cray Place in 1949 and it was demolished in 1950. The area joined Bexley in 1965. Of 18 listed buildings nearby, Frognal House and the Parish Church of All Saints are Grade II*.
