A short history of Canterbury

People lived in the Canterbury area in prehistoric times and the Romans took the settlement of the Cantiaci in the 1st century AD, naming it Durovernum Cantiacorum. A wall with seven gates followed in the late 3rd century. After 410 the site was abandoned for about 100 years before an Anglo-Saxon community formed and the place became Cantwareburh. Danish raids struck in 842 and 851. The inhabitants did not resist William the Conqueror in 1066 and he ordered a castle built. The Black Death arrived in 1348 and the wall was largely rebuilt between 1378 and 1402. Huguenot refugees settled from about 1548. Canterbury has 904 listed buildings including Grade I sites such as the Archbishop's Palace and Greyfriars Monastery.
